คริสต์มาส - เพลงคริสต์มาส

      เพลงคริสต์มาส เริ่มมีขึ้นในศตวรรษที่ 5 ซึ่งผู้แต่งมีทั้งพระสงฆ์และฆราวาส เนื้อร้องเป็นภาษาละติน ลักษณะของเพลงเป็นแบบสง่า เน้นถึงความหมายของการเสด็จมา ของพระเยซูเจ้า แต่ในศตวรรษที่ 12 ได้มีการแต่งในท่วงทำนองที่ร่าเริงสนุกสนานมากขึ้น เริ่มจากประเทศอิตาลี โดยนักบุญฟรังซิส อัสซีซี และนักบวชคณะฟรังซิสกัน เป็นผู้สนับสนุน ให้มีเพลงคริสต์มาสแบบใหม่ ซึ่งชาวบ้านชอบ คือมีท่วงทำนองที่ร่าเริงกว่า และเน้นถึงความชื่นชมยินดี ในโอกาสคริสต์มาส เพลงเหล่านี้มีทั้งที่เป็นภาษาลาติน และภาษาพื้นเมือง เพลงหนึ่งที่แต่งในสมัยนั้น (แต่งคำร้องในปี ค.ศ.1274) และยังใช้อยู่จนถึงปัจจุบัน คือ เพลง Oh Come, All Ye Faithful หรือ Adeste Fideles ในภาษาลาติน เพลงคริสต์มาส ที่นิยมร้องมากที่สุดในปัจจุบันได้แต่งขึ้นในศตวรรษที่ 19 จากประเทศเยอรมัน และประเทศอังกฤษเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เพลงที่มีชื่อเสียงมากได้แก่ เพลง Silent Night, Holy Night ความเป็นมาของเพลงนี้คือ วันก่อนวันฉลองคริสต์มาส ของปี ค.ศ.1818 คุณพ่อโจเซฟ โมห์ (Joseph Mohr) เจ้าอาวาสวัดที่โอเบิร์นดอฟ (Oberndorf) ประเทศออสเตรีย ได้ข่าวว่าออร์แกนในวัดเสีย ทำให้วงขับร้อง ไม่สามารถร้องเพลงตามที่ซ้อมไว้ได้ จึงมีการแต่งเพลงคริสต์มาสใหม่ นำไปเพื่อนชื่อ ฟรานซ์ กรูเบอร์ (Franz Gruber) ใส่ทำนอง ในคืนวันที่ 24 นั้นเอง สัตบุรุษวัดนี้ ก็ได้ฟังเพลง Silent Night เป็นครั้งแรก โดยมีการเล่นกีตาร์ประกอบการขับร้อง ซึ่งกลายเป็นเพลงที่นิยมมากที่สุดทั่วโลก
